New Kimpton Hotel Opening Feb 12 in Old Town

Here they come again. The Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group must really love Old Town. A brand-spanking new $50 million property — which we reported on earlier — Kimpton’s third boutique hotel to land here — opens Feb. 12 on the 1600 block of King Street just outside our Carlyle neighborhood. The other two properties owned by the group are Kimpton-managed Morrison House and Hotel Monaco.

The new hotel will feature a stylized decor, a 4,000-square-foot spa, an upscale restaurant and wine bar by famed restaurateur Robert Wiedmaier on the ground floor and 3,000 square feet of meeting space.

Kimpton’s newest hotel got the approval from City Council and the Alexandria Planning Commission in April 2007, just before the economy started downward and hotel occupancy in Alexandria plunged by 20%. There had been a residential building planned at the site but there were delays caused by a lawsuit over the preservation of some of the historic buildings on site.

The Kimpton project will preserve one of the historic buildings on King Street and the facade of another. The first structure is a scaled-down three-story structure approved by the Board of Architectural Review, and includes three spaces for valet parking.

The hotel is also a food lover’s dream with three dining venues helmed by renowned D.C. chef Robert Wiedmaier, the chef who opened D.C. hot spots Marcel’s and Brasserie Beck (both named after Wiedmaier’s kids).

Brabo by Robert Wiedmaier and Brabo Tasting Room will open in February. In the spring, Old Town’s first gourmet market called The Butcher’s Block will start selling cheeses and charcuterie.

His wining and dining trifecta, designed by New York-based Vicente Wolf, will be adjacent to Kimpton’s Lorien Hotel and Spa.

The new hotel opens February 12 – two days before Valentines Day. They are accepting reservations now – Grand opening room rates start at $179. Normal room rates I found are $329, about the same as the Westin Alexandria located in our neighborhood.

Had dinner tonight at Brabo. It was wonderful. Food was outstanding at Barbo, an upscale dining experience. The main dining room is elegant- they can seat about 100- The bar area is small, but they will let you eat at the bar if you want. The Tasting Room was packed tonight as well– it is very small get there early or go for lunch. I only saw the menu, and they do have the same Mussels as Brassiere Beck serves in DC. From what I heard the hotel is still not 100 percent completed, but for this weekend they are… Read more »
