Was just combing through old email and came across this notice from VDOT:
Virginia highway officials are ending their experiment with variable speed limits.
The Virginia Department of Transportation began using the technology in July 2008 on the Capital Beltway in the area of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project. With construction winding down, VDOT has restored the permanent speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
The system was designed to help avoid the funnel effect that occurs during lane closures.
Officials are now assessing the effectiveness of the pilot program and expect to release a final report in the spring.
The question being, will we see this program used in the HOT lanes construction on the Beltway which is happening west of our neighborhood from the mixing bowl to just past Tyson’s?
What are your thoughts on the variable speed limit program? How did it affect your commute? Let us know in the comments below.
