Sinkhole On North Kings Highway (Updated)

UPDATE: Added photo from Google Maps

If you’re like me, when you are heading South down Route 1 toward Beacon Mall and you take North Kings Highway to avoid the traffic (and all the traffic signals) on Route 1, you may want to choose an alternate Route at least today (Monday).

WUSA9 reports on a sinkhole that opened up on North Kings Highway near Kathryn Street:

A water main break caused a sinkhole to form near a busy intersection in Alexandria Monday morning.

Lucy Caldwell, spokesperson for Fairfax County Police, says a water main broke on Huntington Avenue near North Kings Highway around 10:30 Sunday night. Caldwell says the break was fixed by 1:00 a.m.

Around 4:00 a.m. a sinkhole began to form on North Kings Highway near Kathryn Street. Traffic is affected in the area and Caldwell says commuters can exit the Beltway in that area but cannot access I-495.

Metro has not been affected.

I have only one picture from the area that was taken by Google Maps.
