The City Of Alexandria Wants Your Help On Various Boards & Commissions

The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the following vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions and committees.  Council will act on these vacancies at the May 10, 2011 City Council meeting.  All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record Form and return it to the City Clerk’s Office or file the form electronically via the City’s website no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 29, 2011.   Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council. 

Alexandria ASAP (Alcohol Safety Action Program) Board – This is an existing board but its members will now be appointed by City Council.  Three positions, as follows:  one attorney member; one public defender representative; and one citizen member. The Board meets quarterly on the third Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m.

Alexandria-Caen Sister Cities Committee – three vacancies for citizen members, one due to a resignation and one due to an expired term and one due to an expiring term.  The committee meets on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately four hours per month are required of committee members. 

Alexandria Economic Development Partnership – one vacancy for a citizen director position.  The successful application will serve a three year term beginning July 1, 2011.  Candidates must live within the City of Alexandria and have professional experience in on the following business sectors: Finance; Real Estate; Major Employer (with more than 250 employees); Advertising/Public Relations; Land Use/Development; Attorney/Architect/Planner/Engineer; Information Technology; Defense Industry; Retail/Hospitality and Trade or Professional Associations.  Any interested candidate should submit a resume and brief statement explaining their desire to serve the AEDP by Friday, May 13, 2011.  Resumes and statements can be emailed to Stephanie Landrum, landrum@alexaecon.org .

Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force –   This is an existing board but its members will now be appointed by City Council.  three vacancies:  one representative from the Alexandria business community; one member from and representing the youth of the City of Alexandria; and one member from and representing private schools in Alexandria; all due to administrative actions making the Task Force a permanent board of the City.  The Task Force meets quarterly during the weekday evening.  Approximately two hours per meeting are required of Task Force members.

Alexandria-Gyumri Sister City Committee – five vacancies for citizen positions, two due to resignations; two due to expired terms and one due to an expiring term. The committee meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month.  Approximately three hours per month are required of committee members.

Alexandria Transportation Commission – two vacancies as follow: one for a citizen member possessing qualifications in land-use, transportation and/or municipal finance who resides east of Quaker Lane due to an expiring term and one citizen member possessing qualifications in land-use, transportation and/or municipal finance who resides west of Quaker Lane due to an expiring term. The Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month.  Approximately two hours per month are required of commission members.

Archaeological Commission – one vacancy for a member of Friends of Alexandria Archeology due to an expiring term. The Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month.  Approximately five hours per month are required of commission members.

Board of Architectural Review – Parker-Gray District – one vacancy for an architect member due to a resignation. The Board meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. (except in August, when they are in recess). Approximately five hours per month are required of Board members.

Citizen Corps Council – one vacancy for a citizen member due to an expiring term. The Council meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Approximately four hours per month are required of Council members.

Commission for Women – three vacancies for citizen members due to expiring terms.  The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Approximately eight hours per month are required of Commission members.

Commission on Aging –one vacancy for a citizen member who is 60 years of age or older, due to expired term. The Commission meets on the second Thursday of every month, except in July and August, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Approximately four to six hours of work per month are required of Commission members. 

Commission on Employment – four vacancies:  one business representative from among recognized area businesses, including minority owned and small businesses, due to a resignation; two citizen members due to expired terms; and one for a representative from organizations such as educational agencies, organized labor, rehabilitation agencies, community-based groups, economic development agencies and the public employment service, due to an administrative action. The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 8:00 a.m.  Approximately five hours per month are required of Commission members. 

Commission on HIV/AIDS – five vacancies:  one high school student who currently attends any high school located in the City, due to an administration action (ordinance change); one member from and representing the Inova Alexandria Hospital’s Department of Pastoral Services, due to a resignation; one citizen-at-large position, due to a
resignation; and one member who is a practicing physician, due to a resignation. The Commission meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately three hours per month are required of Commission members. 

Commission on Persons with Disabilities – two vacancies for citizen members due to resignations.  The Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month.  Approximately six to ten hours a month are required of Commission members.

Community Policy and Management Team – one vacancy for a parent representative who is not an employee of any public or private program which receives funds from the Comprehensive Services Act due to a resignation.  The Team meets on the third Wednesday of the month from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Approximately two hours per
month are required of Team members.

Community Services Board – one vacancy for a licensed physician representative, due to a resignation. The Board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.  Approximately eight hours per month are required of Board members. 

Convention and Visitors Association Board of Governors – two vacancies as follow: one vacancy for a hotel owner/manager representative due to a resignation and one national or international trade or professional organization executive from the tourism agency due to a resignation.  The Board meets on the third Monday of the month.  Approximately three hours per month are required of Board members. 

Economic Opportunities Commission – two vacancies for persons who represent low-income individuals and families in the City of Alexandria, and the applicant must be democratically chosen as an EOC representative by the low-income members of the respective organization or geographic area, due to administrative actions.  The Commission meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately four hours per month are required of Commission members.

George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – five vacancies as follow:  one member of a veterans organization other than the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the American Legion, due to a resignation; one member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars due to a resignation; one member nominated by Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society due to a resignation; one member nominated by the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations due to a resignation; and one member who attends high school in the City of Alexandria, due to a resignation.  The Committee meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately three to five hours per month are required of Committee members.

Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – five vacancies: one representative from the Alexandria Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage due to a resignation; one representative from Landmarks Society/Stabler Leadbeater due to an expired term; one Torpedo Factory Artist Association member, due to a resignation; one citizen
representative of Planning District II due to an expired term; one representative from the Lee-Fendall House due to an expired term; and one citizen representative from Planning District III.  The Commission meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.  The Commission does not meet in the summer.  Approximately two hours per month are required of Commission members.

Local Emergency Planning Commission – one vacancy for a member representing the broadcast or print media due to a resignation. The Committee meets quarterly at the call of the chair.  Approximately two hours per meeting are required of Committee members. 

Potomac Yard Advisory Committee – one vacancy for a member representing the Potomac East area (northeast and inner city), due to a resignation. The Committee meets at the call of the chair. 

Public Health Advisory Commission – three vacancies: two for citizen members who shall be a health professionals and at the time of their appointment derive, or within the previous five year have derived their principal income from providing health care, health services or health related activities, due to resignations; and one position for a representative from the Inova Alexandria Hospital, nominated by the Hospital, due to a resignation.  The Commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m.  Approximately four hours per month are required of Commission members. 

Sister Cities Committee –one vacancy for a representative of the Alexandria-Gyumri Sister City Committee, due to a resignation. The Committee meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m., and participates in the Christmas Walk and Scottish games. 

Social Services Advisory Board – two vacancies:  one for a citizen member, due to a resignation; and one parent member, due to an expired term.  The Board meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately six hours per month are required of Commission members.

Please note that the term “expiring term” means the position vacancy is due to a term of an incumbent that is about to expire, and the incumbent may or may not reapply for the position.

All applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall resident outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency waiver is granted, and City Ordinance No. 2641, which states that City employees may not apply for vacancies on boards, committee or commissions that relate to the responsibilities of the department in which they are employed. 

Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.
