Photo of the Day: Ship Launching in Alexandria, Virginia

Ship launched at Alexandria, Virginia

This photo, via the Library of Congress, shows the launching of the Clemence C. Moore in Alexandria, Virginia. If you haven’t heard of Clemence C. Moore, visit this link. Did you know that Alexandria, Virginia was a major shipbuilding area at one point?

This photo occurred at the Virginia Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard which was located near the Jones Point Lighthouse in Jones Point Park. The Virginia Shipbuilding Corporation constructed World War I merchant ships. The metal-hulled vessels were constructed on concrete shipways and launched into the river. The shipways remain near the shore. If you ever get the chance, you can walk the Shipyard trail located along the Alexandria waterfront on the Potomac River.
