The Schooner ‘Virginia’ is a re-creation of its namesake vessel, which was the last pure sailing vessel used by the Virginia Pilot Association. That vessel was in service from 1917 to 1926 on The Chesapeake Bay. You can read more about the Schooner’s history at this link. Enjoy a great video on the mission of the Schooner Virginia above.
Almost entirely handmade, Virginia is the first tall ship built on the Norfolk waterfront in nearly 80 years. After nearly two-and-a-half years under construction, the vessel was launched and christened on
December 10, 2004.
The mission of the boat, which is run by the Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation, is to provide youth a unique educational experience and encourage personal growth through the adventure of sailing a traditional vessel to domestic and international ports of call. Schooner Virginia’s programs in seamanship, navigation, maritime history, and environmental stewardship bring history to life and enrich our appreciation of man’s connection to the sea.
The schooner ‘Virginia’ will arrive in Alexandria TODAY and will be open to the public on Saturday, April 12th and Sunday, April 13th from 12 until 5:00 PM. See you on board!
