Wegmans Food Markets says it plans to add 10 new stores in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions over the next year or two, including a location in Northern Virginia.

The Rochester-based supermarket chain says it’s planning to open four stores in Virginia, two each in Massachusetts and New Jersey, and one each in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The first of the new stores will open this fall in Burlington, Massachusetts. Two others are scheduled to open in 2015 in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, Virginia and Westwood, Massachusetts.

The Alexandria location, which will anchor the Hilltop Village Center at Telegraph Road and Beulah Road, was supposed to open in 2014, but was delayed, the Washington Business Journal reported earlier this year.

The name Alexandria is more marketable than Kingstowne and Mt Vernon or Huntington all parts of Fairfax county. It’s considered “Alexandria” b/c the Post Office designated as such. It’s misleading advertisement since I one then needs to know the cross streets to discern where in fact it’s located. My observation is that the beltway 495/95 is not only the boundary between Alexandria City and Fairfax but also as a geographical barrier that psychologically separates the neighborhoods.
