by Lee Hernly, Editor

The annual start to the Christmas holidays officially kicks off in Alexandria this week as the 44th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend and Parade takes place this weekend in Old Town Alexandria.

We’re putting the things to do surrounding this weekend event in our community events calendar including the main event – the parade.

The parade happens on Saturday, December 6 and begins at 11:00 AM on the corner of St. Asaph and Wilkes streets and ends at Market Square in Old Town.

Participants in the parade include Scottish Clans, Scottish bagpipers and drummers, Scottish dancers, re-enactment groups, Scottie dog groups, dignitaries, classic cars, Santa Claus and more. The parade is free, but you can purchase a VIP ticket to the parade .

The other big event is the Holiday tour of homes. On Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, you can tour (purchase tickets here) some of Old Town’s historic homes, specially decked out for the holidays thanks to some of Alexandria’s best designers and florists.

There is also a holiday marketplace, heather & greens sale, and the annual ‘Deck the Halls’ concert. We’ll have them in our events calendar in a little bit. For more information about the weekend events, click this link.
