REMINDER: As of April 1, you can no longer add value
to your SmarTrip® card on any DASH bus.
DASH will be improving the customer experience starting this April on board its buses by offering riders improved convenience, faster boarding’s, and more reliable departures and arrivals. The Plan Ahead…Pay it Forward initiative eliminates the add value function on all DASH bus. Riders will no longer be able to add value to their SmarTrip® card on the bus. This initiative will make the DASH system the first in the region to take the process of adding value to a SmarTrip® card off of the bus. Riders using a SmarTrip® card will need to load value on their card before they board the bus, so that when they board, they can quickly tap and go.
“Our customers’ response to this change has been extremely positive overall, stated Sandy Modell, DASH General Manager. The original goal of the SmarTrip® program was to speed boarding and reduce dwell times. Asking our riders to tap and go and use their SmarTrip card as it was intended will improve service reliability, keep the line of riders waiting to board moving, and help get our customers to their destination on-time.”

- At any Metrorail Station
- At the Alexandria Transit Store located across from the King Street Metro at 1775-C Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia.
- At Alexandria CVS and Giant Locations
- At area Commuter Stores
In addition to paying with your SmarTrip® Card to ride DASH, customers can always pay the $1.60 fare with cash or use DASH’s deeply discounted, money-saving monthly DASH Pass! The monthly DASH Pass is good for unlimited rides on all DASH buses, on all routes, in any direction, for a full calendar month, and costs only $40.
