Maury Elementary School Playground and field closed for improvements in Alexandria, Virginia

This is an update to this post. A reader writes in about the Maury Schoolyard Initiative. You can also let the Alexandria City Council know this is important to you. I have done so. I hope you will too.

“Dear RedBrickTown,

The next two weeks are critical as to whether City Council is going to step up and be a partner with ACPS and private citizens in Alexandria to fix the Maury Schoolyard.

As you know, last January ACPS committed $500,000 toward the project.  Maury PTA has decided to dedicate it’s Spring2Action fundraising all for the Maury Schoolyard.

There is still no commitment from City Council that they will provide any additional funding.  There is a Work Session Thursday night at ACPS for the school and City Council to discuss the CIP budget, and then the first City Add/Delete session is April 28th.  We should know then whether City Council is going to participate in this or not.

It’s not from a lack of trying.  Alexandria residents have sent almost 200 emails to City Council and the mayor, requesting that the City at least put forth funding to help with storm water drainage.  Other than some general assurances that they are supporting the project, there have been no definitive commitments.

Two year’s worth of work by our community is coming down to the next 14 days!”
