5th Annual Spring2ACTion Set for April 22nd
Wednesday April 22nd, 2015 marks International Earth Day, a day in which the mission is centered around a common theme of economic growth, communities and sustainability joining hands. Based on the day’s “pay it forward” style theme, ACT for Alexandria selected the same day to host its 5th Annual Spring2ACTion event, a 24-hour online giving competition to raise money for local nonprofits.
The popular giving day is the only citywide giving day in the region that continues to grow each year in record fashion with donors and non-profits participating. In 2014, Spring2ACTion raised over $1 million dollars and had more than 7500 individuals join forces with local restaurants and boutiques to participate in this annual crowd-funding event. Spring2ACTion is the only giving day in the region designed to strengthen the impact of more than 120 local nonprofits.
Participating nonprofits represent a wide variety of causes, including legal services, animal rescue, food and shelter, arts and music, and early care and education. From providing scholarships to summer camp to building playgrounds and providing meals to low-income families, the money raised during Spring2ACTion will continue to have a tremendous impact on the community in the coming year.
“This year’s Spring2ACTion is truly a community-wide giving day,” says Brandi Yee, ACT for Alexandria’s Chief Program Officer and one of the masterminds behind Spring2ACTion. “Our two major goals this year are to raise another $1 million for nonprofits serving Alexandria and to engage 10,000 individuals to give. We know that if the community comes together on April 22 to support local causes, we’ll be able to achieve both of those targets.”
As online giving and peer-to-peer fundraising continues to increase in popularity, Spring2ACTion is on the forefront of online giving. While the average global crowd funding donation by an individual totaled $88.22, in 2014, the average Spring2ACTion donation was $103.45. Thanks to this incredible generosity from donors, participating nonprofits raised an average of $8,523 to support their programs in just 24 hours.
Spring2ACTion is hosted by ACT for Alexandria and sponsored by The Maury Lane Fund, Lauren Stack, The Bruhn-Morris Family Foundation, the Mason Hirst Foundation, Maria and Harry Hopper, the Neuhaus-Speck Family Foundation Fund, Speck-Caudron Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors, and the Frantz Family Fund. Spring2ACTion’s contest structure is one of the keys to its success with local nonprofit organizations having the chance to compete for over $40,000 in grants and prizes.
Local businesses, including members of the Old Town Boutique District and Del Ray Business Association, as well as restaurants are donating a percentage of their sales on April 22nd to Spring2ACTion. For wine lovers, Whole Foods will be preparing a special Spring2ACTion menu for their Winesday Wednesday on April 22, with proceeds donated to the giving day event. Anyone who gives on April 22 will receive a Sugar Shack Donut, with proof of donation.
