  • Spring cleanup – Area 4 See this link for details. The City is divided into four collection areas and each area is assigned a special collection Saturday in April or May.

  • Attics & Alleys Tour Find out what mysteries lie behind the closed doors of four of Alexandria’s historic sites! Attics and Alleys is a three-hour walking tour featuring the rarely seen spaces of four sites-the Lee-Fendall House, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, and Carlyle House Historic Park-revealing the remnants of stories otherwise hidden. This behind-the-scenes access is in honor of National Preservation Month. Tickets are limited and advance reservations are required. Tours begin at 9 a.m. and ends around noon. Choose from starting at the Lee-Fendall House (614 Oronoco Street) or Gadsby’s Tavern Museum (134 N. Royal Street). Tour includes stairs, access to confined spaces, and walking over many city blocks, including through alleys. Walking shoes required; tour will be held rain or shine. Photography welcome. Fees: Cost is $35 per person and includes free passes to return to the Museums for regular tours.
  • Build your own rain barrel Registration is required and is easy through the website. At this workshop you will learn how to build, install and maintain a rain barrel, and take one home! Cost for a build your own barrel is $55 for each barrel with PayPal/credit card payment or by check. Limit 2 rain barrels per household at each workshop. Please be aware that your spot at the workshop is not confirmed until we receive payment.

  • ‘Wicked Northern Virginia’ Lecture Local journalist Michael Lee Pope will explore some of the seamier aspects of Northern Virginia’s history. George Washington’s alleged death at the hands of his doctors, the American Nazi Party headquarters in Arlington County, floating brothels on the Alexandria waterfront: Michael will address these and other colorful Northern Virginia stories. Book signing and light refreshments to follow. This free lecture program is sponsored by the Friends of Local History.

  • FREE Mother’s Day Tours at Stabler-Leadbetter Apothecary Museum The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is pleased to offer free tours on Mother’s Day for all visiting mothers! Tour times are from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. and cost $5 for all other adults and $3 for children (ages 5 -12).
  • FREE Mother’s Day Open House @ Friendship Firehouse For this special day, the firehouse photographer will be taking complimentary portraits. Come pose alongside the historic equipment that fought fires in early 19th – century Alexandria. Learn about the suction pumper, and other artifacts such as parade hats and speaking trumpets. Youngsters will also receive a fire hat of their very own.
  • Mother’s Day Tea @ Beatley Library Celebrate Mother’s Day with sweet treats and floral fun! Join us for a tea party just for mothers and their children, then enjoy making three types of paper flowers to take home. For all ages.
