As you may or may not know, Alexandria, Virginia is planning a new bus rapid transit corridor in the West End of Alexandria. Like the Route 1 Transitway,  the West End Transitway will have dedicated lanes for buses. This transitway will run along Van Dorn and Beauregard streets, connecting the Van Dorn Metro station to both the Shirlington Transit Center and the Pentagon. You can see an overview of the project at this link.

The City of Alexandria’s West End Transitway Policy Advisory Group is holding its fifth public meeting on Thursday, May 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pavilion at Mark Center, located at 5708 Merton Court in Alexandria, Virginia.  The West End Transitway Alternatives Analysis / Environmental Assessment (AA/EA) is an analysis of transportation, land use, and environmental conditions along the corridor.  The AA/EA is a required step towards applying for Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding.

The meeting is open to the public, and will provide PAG members an update on the Project Schedule, Environmental Assessment, and Conceptual Engineering.

For more information, visit the project website at this link or contact Allan Fye, Principal Transportation Planner at 703.746.4151.

Try “dedicated lanes for buses” in a couple small sections, some of which are one-direction only. As usual, the West End gets the short end of the stick with regards to infrastructure, all so that long-distance commuters get a convenient cut-through to the Mark Center.
