New Aldi Food Market in Del Ray Goes Before Planning Commission

The City of Alexandria Planning Commission will hold its next regular monthly public hearing on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 7:00 PM in City Hall Council Chambers, located at 301 King Street in Alexandria, Virginia. Docket items can be found at this link.

One of the items up for consideration is the new Aldi Food Market, which is replacing the Giant Food Grocery store, which is closing, at 425 E. Monroe Avenue in Alexandria. The new store will have 29,000 + sq ft and be open from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 8:00 AM Saturdays, and 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM Sundays.

ALDI is asking for a development special use permit and site plan with modifications to construct a grocery store including a special use permit request for a parking reduction that would allow them to have less parking on their property than required by current zoning law. ALDI is making the argument that their stores do not need as much parking because people are in and out of ALDI’s much more quickly than other grocery stores.

As part of approval for this request, Aldi proposes to re-stripe the parking lot (on both the CVS and grocery store lots) which would add 13 spaces to the existing total, bring the available parking to 111 spaces.

You can view the docket items for this project at this link (staff report & site plan). You can find the DRCA’s Land Use Committee’s comments on the proposed store at the docket link as well.
