The first “advisory bike lanes” in the region were installed in Alexandria on Potomac Greens Drive between Massey Lane and Carpenter Road (see below). Advisory bike lanes are marked with a dashed outside line. These lanes at provide dedicated space for cyclists, but allow vehicles to cross the dashed line if they need additional space in the roadway. Vehicles must first yield to any cyclists in the bike lane before crossing the dashed line.
This project was funded by Transportation Management Programs for the area and approved by the Federal Highway Administration.
The new street design will provide additional traffic calming to reduce speeds along the wide roadway. A new crosswalk and handicapped accessible ramps were installed in conjunction with this project, and a new crosswalk with a pedestrian-activated flashing sign will be installed this summer.
