Construction has begun on a new location of the popular donut franchise in the West End of Alexandria, Virginia at Summit Centre.

Renovations of a vacant section of the shopping center are underway and will make way for a new Dunkin Donuts at 4678-B King Street in Alexandria.

Dunkin Donuts, with corporate offices in Canton, Massachusetts, is one of the fastest growing franchise operations.

The donut chain started in 1948 in Quincy, Massachusetts, as the “Open Kettle.” It sold coffee for 10 cents a cup.

In 1950, owner Bill Rosenburg changed the name to Dunkin Donuts.

The company claims almost 11,000 stores in 33 countries serving more than 5 million customers per day. Dunkin Donuts sells an estimated 1.8 billion cups of coffee annually.

The famed donut shop features more than 70 varieties of donuts and also a number of signature sandwiches.
