Agenda Released at Alexandria Chamber Business Competitiveness Summit
The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce released its 2016 Legislative Agenda today at its 2015 Alexandria Business Competitiveness Summit. The Agenda outlines the issues the Chamber will advocate on behalf of its members at the local level and beyond. As the voice of business in the City, the Chamber’s focus remains on critical business topics for the entire city, including transportation, land use, small business issues, the city budget, and taxes.
As part of this year’s summit, the Chamber held a City Council Candidate Forum. During the forum, candidates were asked about their plan to make Alexandria the most competitive jurisdiction in the region in order to retain and grow business. Each had 5 minutes to respond (view video of their responses at this link). Recommendations included better utilization of Eisenhower Valley, streamlining business regulations, and workforce preparedness.
According to Dak Hardwick, Government Relations Chair for the Chamber, “We’re at an inflection point for businesses in Alexandria. Residential property taxes account for almost 75% of all revenues in our city, while commercial revenues account for only 25%. We are a city out of balance.” Hardwick continued, “Most candidates for Alexandria City Council have talked about the need to grow the commercial tax base. The Chamber is encouraged to hear business growth be part of candidate platforms. But the devil’s in the details. The Chamber’s 2016 Legislative Agenda provides candidates a specific, measurable roadmap to positive business growth in Alexandria. We look forward to hearing from the candidates what their plan will be to implement the initiatives called for in the Chamber’s Legislative Agenda and how they will be advocates for Alexandria’s business community.”
The second annual Alexandria Chamber Business Competitiveness Summit was held at the United States Patent & Trademark Office. The Summit gathered business and community leaders together to discuss the state of business in Alexandria and how the community can unleash the future economic power of Alexandria’s business sector.
