First Friday ‘Family Art Night’ at Durant Arts Center Are you looking for a memorable and inspiring evening with your family? Plan to attend the “Family Art Night” sponsored by the Office of the Arts. A “meet and greet” begins at 6 p.m. Pizza, soda and water will be on hand, complements of the Office of the Arts. Art activities begin at 6:30 p.m. Advance per person reservations: $5 residents; $10 nonresidents, and at the door: $10 residents; $15 nonresidents. No experience is necessary. Children must be accompanied by one adult.

Yoga at the Old Town Farmers’ Market Join us this Saturday from 8:15 to 9:00 am for an Open Level Flow Yoga class at the Market on the stage. Radiance Yoga will lead an invigorating practice, perfect for any level. Bring your mat and water: come practice yoga together in the outdoors and create a beautiful community event!

Salvation Army Flea Market in Del Ray The Women’s Auxiliary of The Salvation Army will be holding its annual flea market. Items for sale include jewelry, books, small appliances, furniture, toys and other goods. Proceeds will benefit families in need.

Art on the Avenue POSTPONED An annual event held on Mount Vernon Avenue. There will be art demonstrations, live music, interactive art activities and food vendors. THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD Saturday, October 10.

Java Jolt Lecture at Alexandria Archaeology at Torpedo Factory Kick off Virginia Archaeology Month with a discussion of one of the most prolific writers and orators of the 19th Century, Frederick Douglass. Douglass devoted his career to the abolition of slavery and equality for African Americans. Benjamin Skolnik, through Archaeology in Annapolis and the University of Maryland, has turned to Douglass’ writings to help locate and interpret the sites described in his autobiographies. Through this engagement, we are increasingly recognizing Douglass’ importance not just as a guide to 19th Century quarters and plantations, but to understanding the ways in which ideas and ideologies can be understood, combated, and overcome.

Accreta & ICAN Blood Drive at Beatley Library Local blood recipients and placenta accreta survivors Alexis, Dawn and Marianne from the Hope for Accreta Foundation Northern Virginia chapter and members of ICAN of Northern Virginia invite you to join us at our first joint blood drive. All three placenta accreta survivors are here today because of blood donations from people like you. Our mission at this blood drive is to raise awareness of placenta accreta, promote cesarean awareness, and help women be prepared with the blood products they might need after giving birth. Please join us at our inaugural blood drive on Saturday, October 3 at the Alexandria Beatley Library at 5005 Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia.
