New Bicycle Lanes and Pedestrian Safety Improvements in Alexandria

Bike lanes on Jamieson Avenue in Carlyle area of Alexandria, Virginia

New bicycle lanes have been installed on five streets in Alexandria, Virginia, adding three more lane miles of facilities to Alexandria’s bike network.

Bike lanes were installed on Wheeler Avenue and Braddock Road near the metro station in conjunction with the roadway resurfacing program.

The lanes that were installed on North Hampton Drive, East Monroe Avenue and Stevenson Avenue were all Complete Streets projects that also included traffic calming and pedestrian safety enhancements as well. These included upgrades such as new crosswalks, flashing pedestrian signs and pedestrian signals to improve crossings, as well as pedestrian refuge islands and curb extensions to shorten crossing distances.
