Partnership with Virginia ABC to Teach Students about Living Alcohol and Drug Free
Miss Virginia, Savannah Morgan Lane, recentlky began visits to Virginia elementary schools to let the state’s youngest pupils know how important it is to make healthy choices. The tour began with visits to five elementary schools in Chesapeake and will continue with programs at elementary schools across the state throughout the school year.
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has a long-standing partnership with the Miss Virginia Organization. Virginia ABC’s Education and Prevention Section is continuing that working relationship with Lane for the Miss Virginia School Tour in 2015-16.
Lane, a Midlothian native and student at the University of Virginia, was named Miss Virginia in June. During presentations to elementary school students, she encourages students to live as the best versions of themselves through a platform Lane has dubbed, “the Power of Performance.” It incorporates a compelling message of saying no to drugs and alcohol. The Miss Virginia Organization and Virginia ABC share the combined mission of educating students on the importance of making positive decisions to better prepare students for success.
“We hope that this partnership can contribute substantively to the prevention of substance and alcohol abuse, while equipping children with the tools to make healthy choices and go to a trusted adult with any questions or concerns,” said Virginia ABC Education and Prevention Manager Katie Weaks. “It’s important to share age-appropriate information about alcohol to protect them from dangerous behaviors as they grow older.”
Lane incorporates music and the arts as vehicles to delivering her message of healthy living. “I want to encourage what I call the ‘Three C’s.’ These include confidence, compassion and a love of country,” she said. “They are the building blocks to ensuring that our youth are able to make smart choices.”
