1749 Map of Alexandria, Virginia

Via OHA, on December 16, 1766, George Washington was elected a Trustee of the Town of Alexandria. While he was then a 34 year-old farmer at Mount Vernon, at the age of 17 he had assisted developing an early survey of the proposed town in 1749, just before it was established by Virginia’s colonial government.
