Metrorail Track Work January 8-10

Via WMATA, due to Sunday’s Wild Card playoff game at FedEx field, track work on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines will end at 12:00PM (noon) on Sunday, 1/10/2016. Orange, Blue and Silver line trains will resume normal weekend service, every 15 minutes during daytime hours and Silver Line trains will operate between Wiehle-Reston East and Largo Town Center.

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of January 8-10 with service adjustments on all six lines. Trains will operate as follows:

  • Green Line trains will operate regular weekend intervals between Branch Ave and College Park stations. Free shuttle buses will replace train service at Greenbelt Station only.
  • Silver Line trains will operate between Wiehle Reston-East and East Falls Church stations only. Orange and/or Blue line trains provide service at all other stations.
  • Orange and Blue Line trains will operate every 20 minutes.
  • Red Line trains will operate every 10-18 minutes.

Red Line

Trains every 10-18 minutes | 12:01am Sat until closing Sunday

Single tracking between Forest Glen & Glenmont to allow for communication cable & third rail renewal. Trains will operate:

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont every 18 minutes
  • Between Shady Grove & Silver Spring every 10 minutes from 9AM-9PM only.

Orange Line

Trains every 20 minutes | 10PM Fri until 12:00PM Sunday
Normal weekend service | 12:00PM Sunday until system closing

Single tracking between McPherson Square & Smithsonian to allow for communications upgrades and installation of third rail safety equipment (NTSB recommendation).

Silver Line

Trains run between Wiehle-Reston East & East Falls Church only at regular weekend intervals
10PM Fri until 12:00PM Sunday
Normal weekend service | 12:00PM Sunday until system closing

Silver Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between Wiehle-Reston East and East Falls Church only to allow for NTSB-recommended work between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations. Customers traveling to/from other stations should use Orange and/or Blue line trains to complete their trip. At East Falls Church Station, transfer between Silver and Orange line trains on the same side of the platform.

Blue Line

Trains every 20 minutes | 10PM Fri until 12:00PM Sunday
Normal weekend service | 12:00PM Sunday until system closing

Single tracking between McPherson Square & Smithsonian to allow for communications upgrades and installation of third rail safety equipment (NTSB recommendation).

Yellow Line

Regular weekend service between Huntington & Mt Vernon Sq | 10PM Fri until closing Sunday

All trains will operate to/from Mt. Vernon Sq rather than Fort Totten. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Sq should use a Green Line train to complete their trip.

Green Line

Buses replace trains at Greenbelt Station only | 7AM Sat until closing Sunday

Throughout the weekend, Green Line service will operate at regular weekend intervals between College Park and Branch Ave stations. On Saturday and Sunday, no trains will run between College Park & Greenbelt to allow for construction of a new test track to accept Metro’s new fleet of 7000-series railcars. Free shuttle buses will run between College Park and Greenbelt.
