Alexandria Living Legend John Renner has been named Grand Marshal of the 2016 Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be held on Saturday, March 5. The Ballyshaners (Gaelic for “Old Towners”), organizers of the parade, selected Renner for his dedication to the City. Ballyshaners Chairman Mike Pablo said, “Mr. Renner has an incredible history of dedicating himself to improving Alexandria, and supporting charities throughout the city. As a volunteer organization, the Ballyshaners’ Executive Committee agreed that John is the kind of community member whom we want to feature on what is annually one of Old Town’s biggest days of the year.”
John Renner is the founder of Renner and Company, CPA, an accounting firm dedicated to maintaining the quality of the profession demands to meet today’s challenges. Since 1989, Renner has served his individual, corporate and non-profit clients while also giving back to Alexandria. His community involvement includes serving on the City Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee, and the Waterfront Committee. He also has served on the Boards of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association, First Night Alexandria, and the Alexandria Police Association.
Renner noted that the invitation to serve as Grand Marshal completely stunned him. “When Mike wanted to meet with me, I thought that he as coming to ask if I would include my 1968 Chrysler convertible in the Car Show again. I have driven a number of dignitaries down King Street on parade day over the years. I am thrilled to lead this year’s parade. The Ballyshaners are a small, dedicated group of individuals who work to bring a terrific day to Old Town’s residents and visitors. From my perspective as an accountant and member of the City’s Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee, I only can assume that the group’s work contributes to Old Town’s businesses on parade day.”
Renner indicated that he looks forward to working with the Ballyshaners over the coming months. This year, the Ballyshaners will host Irish Week in Alexandria. From Friday February 26 through Parade Day on Saturday March 5, the group will work with local restaurants and musicians to host events to build momentum and encourage everyone in Alexandria to celebrate Irish-American Heritage Month and attend the parade. “I look forward to attending as many of the Irish Week events as I can,” Renner said. The week will begin with a Grand Marshal dinner, where Renner officially will be installed as the parade’s Grand Marshal, on Friday February 26 at the Embassy Suites Old Town.
