The Sugar Cube in Alexandria Announces Closing

The Sugar Cube in Alexandria, Virginia on King Street
The closing doesn’t appear to be sales or rent related. The owners want to spend more time with family.

In an email to customers today, Sugar Cube owners Alyssa & Kimberly Theodore wrote:

Good Morning!

It is with a mixture of excitement and apprehension that we announce that The Sugar Cube will close for business on May 25th.

Over the past ten years we have thoroughly enjoyed sharing our love of sweets with all of you. We opened our doors in 2006 on N. Lee Street with a vision of building a modern candy store that celebrated sweets of all stripes. Together we discovered Swedish gummies, a world of licorice we never knew existed, and your enduring love of fruit slices, red licorice laces, and malt balls in every flavor. We have been part of the rise of the artisan truffle movement, supporting such fine chocolatiers as Artisan Confections, Norman Love Confections, Christopher’s Confections, Zoe’s Chocolate Co., and Chocolaterie Wanders. We have watched the birth of American, bean-to-bar chocolate. We hope that you will still support amazing local chocolatiers (Potomac Chocolate, Kingsbury Chocolates, Zoe’s Chocolate, Nathan Miller, Fleurir & Blüprint) and continue to seek out and support new makers.

Closure will begin May 9th with 20% off all merchandise. Shop early to stock up on your favorites. Remember, with proper care good chocolate will last 9-12 months. As we near our closure date, discounts will increase. We will officially close our doors at 7:00 pm on May 25th.

We look forward to beginning a new chapter in our lives, one that will allow us time to focus on our families – the husbands and children that have joined our lives these last few years.

While saying goodbye is bittersweet, we have greatly enjoyed being a part of the community. In the coming weeks we will be in and around the store and hope that you stop in so that we can have the opportunity to say thank you in person.

Thank you for your friendship and patronage.
