National Peace Officers Memorial Day part of National Police Week
President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962 which designates May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls on as Police Week. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers gather in Washington, DC during Police Week to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world.
One of the most solemn moments during Police Week events is the gathering of officers in Washington, DC where they remember fallen law enforcement heroes from the year prior whose names are added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The video from 2013 service is above.
At this year’s vigil, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson were among the speakers who dedicate the names of the officers who are being added to the memorial from 2015.
So, if you see a police officer in uniform around Alexandria, be sure to thank them for their service especially this week. To all of our first responders, thank you for all you do.
