Plan to attend the inaugural celebration “Alexandria – gospelFEST” on Friday, May 20, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Durant Arts Center, 1605 Cameron St., Alexandria, VA.

Friday Night LIVE Music @ Port City Brewing Join Port City Brewing on Friday nights for live music from 7-9:00 PM. We will have a local food truck serving up their succulent grub all night. Come hungry! The tour is at 6:30 PM, be sure to reserve a spot.

Family Fun Night @ Chinquapin Park Rec Center Bring the whole family to Family Fun Nights for swimming and fun for all ages on Friday evenings. Pool games include beach ball relays, water basketball, diving for prizes and fun on the ‘Aqua Challenge’ floating obstacle course. Attics & Alleys Tour in Alexandria Find out what mysteries lie behind the closed doors of four of Alexandria’s historic sites! Attics and Alleys is a three-hour walking tour featuring the rarely seen spaces of four sites-the Lee-Fendall House, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, and Carlyle House Historic Park-revealing the remnants of stories otherwise hidden. This behind-the-scenes access is in honor of National Preservation Month. Tickets are limited and advance reservations are required. Tours begin at 9 a.m.

Soldier-led Tours of Fort Ward Tours of the historic fort highlight the history of Fort Ward and army life in the Defenses of Washington. Tours begin in the Museum at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and last about 90 minutes each.

Taste of Whole Foods Market The Whole Foods Market in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, located at 1700 Duke Street, is hosting a hosting a free in-store sampling event Saturdays in May as is every Whole Foods Market location in Northern Virginia. The FREE sampling event is dubbed – ‘Taste of Whole Foods Market’ – Saturday afternoons in May from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Firefighting in Civil War Alexandria Walking Tour When Virginia joined the Confederacy, Union troops occupied Alexandria and most municipal functions were assumed by the U.S. Army. The “We’ve Been Burned: Alexandria Firefighters During the Civil War” walking tour will explore firefighting during the occupation. How were volunteer fire companies treated by Federal authorities? Were firefighters allowed out after curfew? What happened to the firehouses? These questions will be answered as tour participants visit the sites of four of the five fire houses, and learn what happened if there was a fire. For age 10 and older.
