Metrorail Track Work – Memorial Day Weekend 2016

Track Work to Affect ALL Six Lines

Via WMATA, reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over Memorial Day weekend, May 27-30 with track work and service adjustments on ALL six lines.

Trains will operate as follows:

  • Three stations will be closed this weekend: Vienna, Dunn Loring and West Falls Church.
  • There will be no Orange Line trains this weekend. Silver Line service will operate between Wiehle-Reston East and New Carrollton.
  • Riders traveling to/from Orange Line stations must board a Silver Line train to make their trip.
  • Riders traveling to/from Blue/Silver stations between Largo Town Center and Benning Road must use only Blue Line trains.
  • Red Line trains will operate every 8-16 minutes.
  • Yellow and Green line trains operate every 12-15 minutes.
  • Silver and Blue Line trains operate every 20 minutes.

Memorial Day service information

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, Metrorail will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day, and parking will be free at all Metrorail parking facilities.

Red Line

Trains every 8-16 minutes | 12:01AM Saturday until closing Sunday

Single tracking between Fort Totten & Silver Spring to allow for rail stabilization.

Red Line trains will operate

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont every 16 minutes.
  • Between Shady Grove & Rhode Island Avenue every 8-10 minutes from 9AM to 9PM.

Orange Line

Buses replace trains at Vienna, Dunn Loring and West Falls Church; Silver Line trains replace Orange Line trains | 7:00AM Saturday through closing Monday

  • Silver Line trains will replace Orange Line service this weekend with all Silver Line trains running between Wiehle-Reston East and New Carrollton.
  • Riders traveling to/from Orange Line stations should board a Silver Line train to make their trip.

Stations Closed: Vienna, Dunn Loring and West Falls Church.

From 7:00 a.m. Saturday through closing Monday, buses will replace trains between Vienna and East Falls Church. Free shuttle buses will operate on two routes:

  • Local – between Vienna and East Falls Church making intermediate stops at Dunn Loring and West Falls Church. Please allow 12-15 minutes of travel time for each station stop.
  • Express – between Vienna and East Falls Church with no intermediate stops. Please allow up to 25 minutes travel time.

Last Train Times:

  • The last eastbound train of the night to New Carrollton will depart East Falls Church at its regular time. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last eastbound train departs East Falls Church at 2:35 a.m. On Sunday and Monday, the last train departs East Falls Church at 11:35 p.m.
  • The last westbound train of the night to East Falls Church will depart New Carrollton at its regular time. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last westbound train departs New Carrollton at 2:36 a.m. On Sunday and Monday, the last train departs New Carrollton at 11:36 p.m.

Work Performed: Track circuit replacement.

Silver Line

Trains operate every 20 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and New Carrollton | 7:00AM Saturday through closing Monday

Single tracking between McPherson Square and Smithsonian to allow for restraining rail replacement.

Trains will operate every 20 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and New Carrollton. As a result, the following five stations will be served by Blue Line trains only: Largo Town Center, Morgan Boulevard, Addison Road, Capitol Heights and Benning Road.

If traveling to/from a station between Benning Road & Largo Town Center, use a Blue Line train. Silver Line trains will travel via the Orange Line to/from New Carrollton this weekend.

Blue Line

Trains every 20 minutes | 7:00AM Saturday through closing Monday

Single tracking between McPherson Square and Smithsonian to allow for restraining rail replacement.

Yellow Line

Trains every 12-15 minutes Huntington to Mt. Vernon Sq only | 12:01AM Saturday through closing Monday

All trains will operate to/from Mt. Vernon Sq rather than Fort Totten to accommodate Green Line single tracking. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Sq should use a Green Line train to complete their trip.

Green Line

Trains every 24 minutes | 12:01AM Saturday through closing Monday

Single tracking between U Street & Fort Totten to allow for radio cable installation and rail maintenance.
