Del Ray Neighbors Need Your Help After Tragedy

House fire in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia

As readers know, last night, the Alexandria Fire Department responded to a 3 alarm house fire in the 100 block of E. Howell Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

Six residents living in the three apartments were displaced. Red Cross was on scene assisting the residents who were displaced. One dog and one cat were rescued by AFD. A second cat is still missing. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Pete and Molly, two of the Del Ray residents who lost everything in the fire, put up a GoFundMe page hoping to get some assistance from the neighbors after last night’s terrible tragedy.

If you can, please consider donating to help out a neighbor in need.

We’re raising money because we have 2 cats Rumbelina is at the vets and Ophelia is still missing. We’re raising money for medical bills for the cat that we have found. We also just lost everything. We stood outside of our apartment for 3 hours and watched everything we’ve worked for go up in smoke. I also have a small moving company and where my office is inside my apartment is where all of the fire damage occurred. I can’t believe that on top of trying to run a business that this would ever happen. Molly has lost all of her belongings as well but her craft area where she does all of her paintings is toast now as well. We live in a small business center part of town and there’s art everywhere. Was kind of hoping to get help from everyone. We live in Del Ray Alexandria right behind the evening star. Ophelia is still missing my little gangsta kitty m. She’s very skidding and not used to the outdoors so really we need help canvassing the neighborhood. Cause if she’s outside we got to find her. Please help us out we could really use your support.

Sorry to be rude, but isn’t this why you should have personal and business insurance?

For that matter, do they have insurance, and are pulling a scam?

John – You have a valid concern. One of our long time readers who tipped me off to this knows the couple and vouched for them.

Wait, is someone posting under the name John Doe posting about scams? I do know the couple, can vouch. Will also mention that they had moved in very recently and that Pete’s business is a start up, and that also, they’re asking for help covering mainly an emergency vet bill – they’re hardly asking for an amount that will allow them to restart their lives, replace their things, put down a security deposit on a new place, or even cover hotel costs. May we all be so fortunate to have a lot in the bank, or to have time to… Read more »

I wouldn’t get on John Doe’s case for showing skepticism over internet fundraising. Given the response you gave, I think his use of a pseudonym is justified…

I just thought the dichotomy was funny. However, I’m pointing out that they weren’t exactly shooting for the moon here, just enough for the cat’s emergency hyperbaric oxygen treatment. I also offered to let him PM me if he needs more information. For what it’s worth, though, “Sorry to be rude” is generally a euphemism for “I’m about to be a jerk about your misfortune.”
