This Alexandria Driver Doesn’t Like Bike Lanes

So much for dedicated bike lanes on King Street...

While bike lanes have been a huge issue in Alexandria, Virginia, especially on Shuter’s Hill (King Street) where this photo was taken, this illegal parking is just thoughtless.

What do you think?

It’s just as bad on Monroe Ave, where drivers regularly drive into the bike lanes to avoid having to go over the speadbumps near Aldi and the Y.

Happens multiple times a day – I’ve seen half a dozen cars do it in the space of a couple of minutes before. Next time I have some time off, I might just sit there and take a video to show City staff.

Jon, I emailed City staff a bunch of photos a week or two ago of cars driving in the Monroe Ave bike lanes! It drives me absolutely crazy. I haven’t gotten a response yet, so maybe it would help if more people raised the issue with them. I don’t know if the answer is more enforcement or a structural change to the speed bumps, but something needs to be done because the situation is seriously unsafe.

But is it illegal to do that? I’m just asking, I really don’t know if adding “more enforcement” does anything if it’s not illegal to go in the bike lanes when there is no traffic. Any lawyers out there?

Eh if there are no bikers in the area then I don’t see the big deal.

I’ll remember that line next time I double park in the middle of a street that has no traffic on it. I’m sure it will get me out of a ticket.

Parking on a sidewalksdisrespects people who walk and is a traffic violation. if you see a vehicle parked on a sidewalk or in a bikelane, Alexandria Police request that you report it via their non-emergency line: (703) 746-4444.
