Driver Charged in Fatality Crash
In consultation with Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Alexandria Police have charged Leonard Wainstein, 92, of Fairfax, with two counts of Reckless Driving related to the pedestrian crash that occurred on August 2, 2016, in Old Town.
At approximately 10:09 a.m., police responded to the area for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Initial investigation indicates a 92-year-old man was attempting to park in a parking lot when he backed into the 49-year-old parking attendant. After striking the attendant the driver abruptly accelerated forward, driving into Swift Alley and striking another pedestrian, a 44-year-old man. The driver remained on the scene. The parking attendant was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deceased has been identified as Jeremais Herrera Rodriguez of Alexandria. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help get Mr. Rodriguez back to his home country of Guatemala to his final resting place.
Members of the Crash Reconstruction Team continue investigating the incident. Alexandria Police ask that witnesses or people with information regarding this incident contact Investigator Diana Barrett at 703.746.6873.
