Heat Advisory Continues Tuesday in Alexandria Area

08 - Celebration!!
It has been really hot and humid lately. Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 16, will bring more of the same as a high pressure system continues over the southeast US coast bringing a surge of warm and humid air to northward through the Mid-Atlantic.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the Alexandria, Virginia area on Tuesday from 12 Noon to 8:00 PM.  The combination of the heat and humidity will make it feel between 105-109 degrees.

It will be terribly awful in the afternoon, when prolonged exposure could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. To avoid this, be sure to schedule frequent rest breaks in an air conditioned or shaded place, if you have to be outside.

Pets also need protection from dehydration and heat illnesses. Here are some tips from the Washington Humane Society.

  • Keep pets indoors in air-conditioned environments or near fanned areas.
  • Make sure pets have access to shade and plenty of cool drinking water.
  • Walk or exercise pets in the early mornings and evenings to minimize exposure to the heat.
  • Leave pets at home in a controlled-temperature environment whenever possible. Pets are often much safer and more comfortable indoors than in vehicles and at outdoor summer events.
  • Never leave pets closed in a hot vehicle. It’s the law. And even with the windows cracked, it can heat up to dangerous levels in a matter of minutes.
