Police: Suspicious Event in Fairfax Area; Driver Approaches Teen

Fairfax County Police Detectives were alerted to a suspicious event that involved a teenage girl walking to a school activity in the West Springfield area of Fairfax County. A 15-year-old Fairfax-area girl was walking in the 5000 block of Sideburn Road, in Fairfax, just before 5 p.m. to sports practice when a 1997 Toyota Corolla pulled up next to her. When she looked over, the driver asked if she needed a ride. The girl declined and the man asked again. She refused again and continued walking. The driver never exited his car and eventually drove off. She reported the incident to school security as soon as she arrived there.

Detectives followed up on the reported incident, were able to identify the driver, 27, of the Clifton-area, and talk to him. Their investigation confirmed that no crime occurred, but the entire incident was documented.

Fairfax County Police encourage anyone who might experience a similar incident to report it to them immediately. If a patrol officer can get to the area, locate the reported suspicious person, they will attempt to talk to them and find out who they are and why they’re there. If there is no criminal violation, they simply document the incident.

Reporting any suspicious persons, cars or activity sends the message to passersby in your neighborhood that you care about your community and your neighbors. And it facilitates our goal of maintaining safety and security throughout the county.
