New Adopters can ‘Clear it Forward’
On this day, AWLA will waive pet adoption fees as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to help families find and adopt pets. Please note that all standard AWLA adoptions policies and procedures apply. We will be joined by the 2016 “Vola Lawson Animal Champions” VCA Animal Hospitals from both Alexandria and Old Town, which are also local sponsors of the event.
Since 2015, Clear the Shelters has resulted in more than 70,000 pet adoptions nationwide. “We’re excited to be able to take part in Clear the Shelters again this year,” said AWLA Executive Director Megan Webb. “Last year we helped to find homes for more than 60 animals, including some birds and gerbils, as well as several animals who had been with us for long periods of time. Clear the Shelters is a wonderful way to connect some of our less visible pets with caring families who might not have met otherwise.”
While AWLA is pleased to reach new adopters with Clear the Shelters, their care and treatment of these future pets has had associated costs, which is why they are launching a new initiative, “Clear It Forward.” “Clear It Forward” allows individuals to support the success of Clear the Shelters by pledging funds for each animal adopted on Aug. 19.
Donors can also contribute a fixed amount, all of which will help us defray the expenses of adopting animals at no cost during Clear the Shelters. The “Clear It Forward” donation page can be found at this link. “Clear It Forward” expands upon our popular “Adopt It Forward” program, where individuals can pay the adoption expenses for a specific animal to help a future adopter.
The AWLA will also be hosting a bake sale and a yard sale in conjunction with Clear the Shelters. Donated pet supplies will be available at a discount for new pet owners, and proceeds benefit the AWLA.
