Beginning August 14, metered parking will be in effect at the parking lot at Union Station in Alexandria, Virginia located on Callahan Drive.
This change will allow people to park longer than the current 2-hour restriction, as well as provide better management of the spaces in this lot. The meter rates are $2.50 per hour or a daily maximum rate of $15. There is also an option to pay to park for up to 10 days. Staff will monitor the usage of this lot over the next year to ensure the pricing and restrictions are appropriate.
The meters installed in this lot are the first of a pilot project to test new meter technology in the City. The new meters will be “Pay by Plate,” meaning a person can pay to park at the meter using their license plate number. Unlike other metered locations, there is no requirement that a parking receipt be displayed in the vehicle. This provides a more convenient payment process for the parker and is more cost-effective and efficient for the City to manage and enforce.
This will only apply to about 25 spaces on the Union Station lot and not to the extended gravel lot. The metering of this lot was reviewed by the Traffic and Parking Board in April 2017 and approved by the City Council in June 2017.
