Advisory Group Seeks Input on New Names for Jefferson Davis Highway

Advisory Group Seeks New Names for Jefferson Davis Highway in Alexandria

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is helping to make room for more dogs in overcrowded animal shelters affected by Hurricane Matthew and is inviting the Alexandria community to join in the relief effort.

UPDATE: The August 17 meeting has been CANCELLED.

The City of Alexandria’s Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Renaming Jefferson Davis Highway has launched an online survey and scheduled two public hearings to solicit potential new names for a portion of U.S. Route 1. In September 2016, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to begin the process of renaming Jefferson Davis Highway in Alexandria.

The survey, which is available through September 15, allows respondents to suggest new street names. The Advisory Group will also hold public hearings on September 25 and at the final meeting on October 5 (see below) for those who wish to provide feedback in person, and is contacting residents and businesses on Jefferson Davis Highway via postal mail.

Since the Alexandria City Council has already voted to begin the renaming process, the Advisory Group is only seeking input on potential new names, and not on whether the name should be changed.  The Advisory Group includes both Alexandria and Arlington representatives and encourages name suggestions that would be appropriate for both localities if adopted for both.

The Advisory Group’s final meeting is expected to be held on October 5, at which a recommendation to the City Manager would be adopted. All three meetings will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the Community Room of The Station at Potomac Yard (650 Maskell St., Alexandria).
