“Our amazing client base and high-performance, tight-knit culture creates growth for our agency,” says Neil Welsh, an Alexandria native and founder/president of Silverback Strategies. “Growth, in turn, creates opportunity. It’s an honor to be on the list again this year and a true testament to our outstanding team’s ability to consistently evolve in an evolving and highly competitive digital marketplace. ”

Silverback Strategies specializes in SEO, Paid Search, Social, Content Marketing and Web analytics. The agency was also recognized as one of the Washington Business Journal’s 2016 Best Places to Work and Washingtonian’s 2017 Great Places to Work.

The Inc. 5000 is compiled annually by and is based on overall revenue growth during the previous three-year period. Formerly the Inc. 500, the list expanded to 5,000 in 2007 to call attention to a “deeper, richer understanding of the entrepreneurial landscape and…a broader spectrum of success,” according to the publication.

Silverback’s annual revenue has grown 300% since 2013 and reached $4.6 million in 2016. The agency added nine new employees over the past year, increasing the total number of Silverback staffers to 27. The agency’s portfolio includes Strayer University, PenFed Credit Union, CQ Roll Call, Long Roofing and eCornell — Cornell University’s online learning platform — among several others.

Mr. Welsh launched the company in his hometown in 2007. He believes that much of the company’s success is due to recruiting talented people — and then removing the barriers that could hold those skilled team members back. “Intellectual curiosity is a key part of our culture,” Mr Welsh says. “We push our team to take risks and innovate every day. What we learn is the foundation for future success. We don’t sweat the small stuff like what you wear to work or whether you got permission to try something new. If you contribute to the team and client performance, you’re a star here.”

Financial success has not come at the expense of employee perks. Silverback Strategies offers employees excellent pay and benefits, including paying 100% of health insurance. The agency also offers dental, vision, 401(k) matching, paid maternity/paternity leave, gym memberships and limited tuition reimbursement.

All Silverback employees are given the opportunity to travel to New York City, Mountain View, Calif., Boston, Mass. and other locales throughout the country for training, conferences and events with industry leaders like Google and Bing.

The company holds regular happy hours, lunch-and-learn sessions and sponsors out-of-the-office field trips to play dodgeball, bubble soccer and cornhole. Silverback even implemented a voluntary meditation program with on-site training at no cost to employees.

“We’re not like every other agency,” Mr. Welsh says, “but we think that’s what makes us special.”
