Silverback Strategies, a digital performance marketing agency located in Alexandria’s historic Old Town, has been named to the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States for the third consecutive year.
Silverback ranks fifth among advertising and marketing agencies from the Washington, D.C. metro region and is the 1,325 company ranked overall, up 10 spots from 2016. The company was 1,968 in 2015.

Silverback Strategies specializes in SEO, Paid Search, Social, Content Marketing and Web analytics. The agency was also recognized as one of the Washington Business Journal’s 2016 Best Places to Work and Washingtonian’s 2017 Great Places to Work.
The Inc. 5000 is compiled annually by Inc.com and is based on overall revenue growth during the previous three-year period. Formerly the Inc. 500, the list expanded to 5,000 in 2007 to call attention to a “deeper, richer understanding of the entrepreneurial landscape and…a broader spectrum of success,” according to the publication.
Silverback’s annual revenue has grown 300% since 2013 and reached $4.6 million in 2016. The agency added nine new employees over the past year, increasing the total number of Silverback staffers to 27. The agency’s portfolio includes Strayer University, PenFed Credit Union, CQ Roll Call, Long Roofing and eCornell — Cornell University’s online learning platform — among several others.
Mr. Welsh launched the company in his hometown in 2007. He believes that much of the company’s success is due to recruiting talented people — and then removing the barriers that could hold those skilled team members back. “Intellectual curiosity is a key part of our culture,” Mr Welsh says. “We push our team to take risks and innovate every day.
