George Washington Middle School CLOSED Due to Burst Pipe

UPDATE (5:50 PM): ACPS sent out information about the closure (which we posted below) and tonight’s meeting with the following information we didn’t have:

Tonight’s 7 p.m. PTA meeting will move to the Rotunda on the second floor at T.C. Williams High School. Please enter through door 1 by the parking garage, head up the stairs in the middle of the cafeteria and turn left at the top. Interim Superintendent Dr. Berlin will be present to answer questions.

As one of our older buildings with old HVAC systems, George Washington Middle School has been particularly hard hit by the freezing temperatures. We understand your concerns and frustrations. The back draft from the HVAC system and burst water pipe are issues that are being experienced in aging facilities throughout the area and are not particular to GW. Although this does not make the situation any better, we want to make you aware that we are sympathetic to the situation and are doing our best to resolve it as soon as possible.

George Washington Middle School in Alexandria, Virginia will be closed for the rest of today (Tuesday, January 9, 2018) and Wednesday, January 10, 2018, due to a burst water pipe in the electrical room.

The Fire Marshall has deemed the school unsafe to reenter until the issue has been resolved. As such, all activities in the school or on school grounds are canceled.

Tonight’s GW 7 p.m. PTA meeting has been moved to the Rotunda on the second floor at T.C. Williams High School.

This is a developing story and as more news becomes available, we’ll update the post.
