ACPS Sends Letters to Parents over School Bomb Threats

The Alexandria Police Department has made two arrests in a series of recent bomb threats targeting Alexandria City Public Schools ACPS in Alexandria, Virginia.

ACPS sent the following letter home to parents…

Dear ACPS Parents, Guardians and Families,

We are writing with an update concerning the threats that were made yesterday on social media to Francis C. Hammond and George Washington middle schools.

This morning, the Alexandria Police Department (APD) announced the arrest of two teens for threats to bomb Hammond and GW in separate incidents. APD takes all threats to ACPS seriously and will investigate and prosecute them.

We know that it has been a difficult time for many of our families. Throughout the incident, the safety and security of students were our absolute top priorities. We worked very closely with Alexandria law enforcement throughout the incident at Hammond and concerning the threats made to GW. We also worked with them in coordinating our communications to ensure that the information we shared was accurate and verified.

We are aware that, at times, information can circulate in the community before an official statement from ACPS is released. In any emergency, we will communicate with families as soon as we can, but we will always ensure the safety of students and staff before beginning communications. We will also continue to balance the need to share information quickly with the need to share accurate and verified information.

Please remember to follow the official ACPS communications channels during an emergency and the Alexandria Police Department on Facebook and Twitter in the event of police activity. Also take a moment to review our Emergency Communications Frequently-Asked Questions to learn how communications are handled in emergencies and weather situations. Please also ensure your contact information is up-to-date with your school.

Students react in many different ways to these kinds of incidents. School counselors are on hand to help if your child needs additional support. Please reach out to a counselor if you notice anything unusual about your child’s behavior. Also encourage them to reach out to a trusted adult if they see or hear something that sounds disturbing or dangerous, even from a friend.

Again, please remind your child about responsible social media use. ACPS teaches and encourages responsible social media use for all our students. If your child needs a reminder, please share this presentation for students and view this presentation for parents.

We appreciate the hard work of our law enforcement officers in addressing these threats. If you see a police officer today, be sure to say thanks!

Thank you for your continued support of ACPS.
