President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962 which designates May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls on as Police Week. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers are in the Washington, DC area during Police Week to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world.

So, if you see a police officer in uniform around Alexandria, be sure to thank them for their service especially this week. A BIG thank you to the Alexandria Police Department and Alexandria Sheriff’s Office for all you do for our community of Alexandria, Virginia from us here @ Port City Wire and a thank you to all who serve as law enforcement in your community.
