While it is the 243rd birthday of the U.S. Army today, it is also Flag Day. In the video above, WatchMojo.com takes a look at the history and meaning behind Flag Day. In 1949, President Harry Truman signed legislation designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day. Though Flag Day is not a federal holiday, the U.S. government encourages its citizens to display Old Glory outside of their homes and businesses.
One thing the video doesn’t explore though is the true origin of the flag. The video says that the origin of the US flag is not known; this is incorrect. It comes from the Revolutionary flag, the Grand Union Flag has historically been referred to as the “First National Flag”; although it has never had any official status. The ‘Grand Union Flag’ is a combination of the United Colonies Flag (13 stripes) and the Union Jack. During the war of independence, the Union Jack was replaced with 13 stars, and more stars added later.
