Are Scooters in Alexandria an Eyesore? (Opinion)

A Port City Wire reader writes in and says the scooters in Alexandria, Virginia, part of the Dockless Mobility Pilot Program are an eyesore.(File photo)

A reader writes in about the Dockless Mobility Program which I posted about here yesterday. Since yesterday, we’ve gotten quite a lot of email about this program – most of which I can’t post. City staff updated City Council recently on the program.

A reader writes in and says the scooters are an eyesore:

I am NOT in favor of this program. Bikes and scooters do not belong on streets with pedestrians and cars. I have a theory that our streets were built at a certain width for automobiles, not bikes and scooters. Widen the streets and maybe they can coexist – until that happens I an not in favor of the program.

I believe the scooter are an eyesore, many fall over (for various reasons), block sidewalks (meant for pedestrians), and I have continually noticed in the Carlyle area that the riders disobey traffic laws. I also believe this is not good for property values.

Prefer to see them gone.

What do you think of the scooters?

Couldn’t agree more! These scooters particularly are urban litter and are not safe. Please discontinue this program for good of the community.

I also agree! Scooters littering the sidewalk are a hazard to visually impaired and elderly pedestrians.

I think the scooters are a huge eyesore. I believe if they had a place for people to leave them it could work, but leaving them on the sidewalk, or wherever riders dump them is not good. Capital Bikeshare is a good example it should follow.
