On Mother’s Day, we celebrate Mothers everywhere! It is a time to say thank you to the women who do so much for others.
Mother’s Day officially started in the 1900s due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who thought mother’s deserved their own day to honor the sacrifices they make for their families. The first Mother’s Day celebrations took place in West Virginia and, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
- “Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, has instilled within each of us a powerful biological instinct to reproduce; this is her way of assuring that the human race, come what may, will never have any disposable income.” – Dave Barry
- “Motherhood: All love begins and ends there.” – Robert Browning
- “Motherhood is the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary – it’s an act of infinite optimism.” – Gilda Radner
The Any.do team surveyed their users for Mother’s Day (I’m one and you should be too…) to find out what makes Moms special, and why Moms deserve to be at the top of our list this Mother’s Day. Click the video above to see the results of the survey.
On Mother’s Day, I am also reminded of a beautiful story I once heard.
While serving the poor in Calcutta, Mother Teresa once found a young boy on the streets and brought him back to Shishu Bhavan—one of the homes she established for impoverished and disabled children. There, the boy was given food and clean clothes—but he ran away! The next day, again the boy was brought back to Shishu Bhavan, and again he ran away. Three times, the boy ran away, until, on the third day, one of the Sisters followed him.
“Why do you keep running away from home?” the Sister asked when she caught up to him. The boy pointed to a tree, under which a woman was standing, cooking a simple meal of food she had found in the garbage. “But this is home,” he said, “This is where my mother is.”
Much has been written throughout history about mothers, because everyone has one. We’d like to hear about yours.
I will say my wife is special simply because she puts up with me and my Mom is special because she’s always there when I need her. Happy Mother’s Day to my wife, my Mom and all the Moms out there.
Feel free to share a few words about your mom. What makes the Mom in your life special?
